Our team
Eye care is only as good as the people behind it.
Meet the Santa Maria team that helps patients feel welcome, understand their care, and move smoothly from check-in through treatment and follow-up.

Lead optometrist · Dr. John Prewett
Decades of experience, one patient at a time.
Dr. Prewett has cared for Santa Maria families since the early 1990s. Patients come back — and bring their children — because exams here are unhurried, findings are explained in plain language, and decisions are made together.
A 1981 graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry with postgraduate training in the therapeutic management of ocular conditions, he is certified in glaucoma treatment and management and brings long experience in low vision and contact lenses. For patients, that depth means one doctor who can examine thoroughly, treat what he finds, and know when a condition needs closer watching.
Thorough by habit
Examinations that look past the prescription to the health of the eye itself.
Explained clearly
You leave knowing what was found, what it means, and what happens next.
Front office
A welcoming start to every visit.
The first people you meet set the tone for everything that follows. Our front desk keeps the practical side of your visit simple — in English or Spanish.
Requesting and confirming appointments that fit your schedule
Knowing what to bring — glasses, medication lists, insurance cards
Basic insurance questions answered before your visit, not after
Clear expectations for what happens before, during, and after you're seen

Clinical team
Skilled support behind every examination.
Before you see the doctor, trained technicians complete preliminary measurements, refractions, diagnostic imaging, and specialized testing — including the dry-eye treatment workflows our clinic is known for.
That preparation matters twice over. The doctor starts your exam with a fuller picture of your eyes, and your visit moves efficiently without ever feeling rushed. It's also why doctors here can spend their time on clinical decisions rather than data collection.
More information, earlier
Testing completed before the exam gives the doctor more to work with.
Efficient, not hurried
A prepared visit leaves more time for your questions, not less.

Back office
Care that stays coordinated.
Behind every visit, our administrative team keeps scheduling, records, referrals, treatment plans, follow-up visits, and eyewear and contact-lens orders connected — so nothing depends on you remembering to chase it down.
Fewer loose ends
Referrals sent, results filed, follow-ups scheduled before you leave.
One connected record
Exam findings, treatments, and eyewear needs travel together across the practice.
